A vintage Polaroid SX-70 Model 1 lovingly repaired and reconditioned by our friends at Mint Hong Kong.
Polaroid founder Edwin Land was a prolific inventor. The SX-70 camera and integral film was the pinnacle of his career and came closest to his desire to for “absolute one-step photography”.
It is both a design classic and an extraordinary technical achievement. The camera and film was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s at a reputed cost somewhere between two hundred million and two billion dollars. It required the development of new materials, processes and facilities and was the first instant camera where the photograph came out of the camera and developed in front of your eyes with no intervention from the user.
The SX-70 is an SLR (single lens reflex camera) allowing the user to see directly through the lens in the viewfinder, with an ingenious system of mirrors allowing it to fold flat and fit in a coat pocket. Elegant and simple to use it has only two control wheels for focus and aperture and a shutter button.
Many of the world’s most famous photographers became enthusiastic SX-70 users including Ansel Adams, Walker Evans, David Hockney, Andre Kertesz and lAndy Warhol.
This is the original version manufactured between 1972 and 1977. At Land’s insistence the glass fibre reinforced plastic body was chrome plated with tan leather patches, giving its iconic look.
SX-70 cameras are compatible with all Impossible SX-70 films or 600 films when used with an ND (neutral density) filter.
The SX-70 is not equipped with an integral flash. Original disposable flash bars and a new electronic flash bar made by Mint are available.
