INFO
Raqs Media Collective are three Delhi-based artists – Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula and Shuddhabrata Sengupta – whose practice includes photography, new media, film, media theory and curation.
This exhibition features two works. An Afternoon Unregistered on the Richter Scale (2011) is a silent looped video projection that transforms an archival photograph taken in Calcutta in 1911 through a series of subtle alterations.
Raqs describe their intervention in this image as a means to
“ conjure a constellation of stars onto a drawing board, induce tremors too gentle to disturb the Richter Scale…and introduce a rustle and hesitation in the determined stillness of surveyors hard at work mapping empire. “
36 Planes of Emotion (2011) is an installation of Perspex book-like objects etched with the names of emotional states. Arranged on a table and lit by a reading lamp, the work provides a similarly poetic response to ideas around language and meaning.
Exhibition supported by the Columbia Foundation Fund of The London Community Foundation.
